Built in 1966 by developer Robert Rummer, with design inspiration by Claud Oakland and A. Quincy Jones (Jones & Emmons Architects), this home is a classic example of post and beam architecture that defines the mid-century modern era. Situated in the Bohmann Park / Vista Brook neighborhood of Portland, the home quietly blends into its surroundings by combining a subtle approach of mid-century modern and Pacific Northwest aesthetics, and gives a nod to the Japanese architectural style of Sukiya-zukuri.

Echoing the exterior, the interior palette created by the home owners, encourages the experience of an indoor / outdoor living environment. The open floor plan surrounding the entry atrium offers an expansive feel in a compact footprint. The remodeled kitchen design maintains the original layout and incorporates a communal butcher block island by local designer Niles Snyder. Paramount to the remodel, was the understanding of the original intent of these homes. The idea of a modern and well designed home that was also affordable helped to set parameters and avoid unintentionally over upgrading the design.

The home’s upgrades include reducing it’s energy and environmental impact with recycled denim insulation, energy efficient appliances and a tankless water heating system. Original remaining elements include the radiant heat system and passive solar heating and cooling.

Home owners Tyler Stone and Patrick Hinds are continuing the preservation of their home when not creating or performing music in the electronic pop band Sutro.
